Starbucks Forum:

Have you noticed that if you go to most Starbucks in the northern suburbs and north city the employees are generally very friendly and helpful. The futher south you go the ruder they get. Once your downtown and move south you might as well forget seeing smiles on anyones faces.

They act like the customer should be grateful they are there. The Starbuck locations inside Marshall Fields on State Street is the worst. Especially at the Wabash side. I was in there last Saturday morning and the store was open but no one was behind the counter. Two guys walked in and took a few bags of coffee and walked out. Do you think those employees cared? No, they did not. The only time they have a smile on their face is the few seconds it takes when they are being handed their paycheck.

As a matter of fact, when you think about it this type of attitude is just about at any retail business. The further south you go, the worse it gets.

Why is that???

Hello Chris. I love this forum and I would love to expand on this issue with you, but is it a specific geographical dilemma? Is this opinion based exclusively on a particular city? Would this be reversed in the southern hemisphere? What are the odds those employees use direct deposit for their paychecks, and if so, when would I see them smile? Is there a chance they might not smile if their paycheck sucks?

Hi...I'm a new member here, just thought I would post a quick thought. The Marshall Fields stores, as well as any grocery stores are not owned by the Starbucks company, they are owned by a partner company which doesn't train their employees as Starbucks employees. While not every Barista is perfect, this could be the reason for your bad experience at Marshall Fields...they are an employee of Marshall Fields, not Starbucks, and therefore are not trained or knowledgable in any of the Star skills, or green apron skills....its just food for thought...
