I recently interviewed and was offered a job at a Starbucks in Canada. However, I am a US citizen so I am required to get a work permit and SIN # (like a Social Security Number) before I start working there. I interviewed with 2 different managers, and at the end of my second interview I checked with the manager to make sure she knew I was a US citizen, which required me to get a work permit, and if this was alright. She said yes it was fine, they had dealt with it before. So, I get a call from the other manager saying I got the job and to come into the store to fill out my employment paperwork. When I am in there, I again make sure I will be getting my letter from Starbucks that I have to take in with my work permit application. He then tells me he didn't realize I was a US citizen (even though it was indicated in 3 places on my application and I talked to the other manager about it). So, he said he would have to revoke my offer of employment. I inquired about the reasoning behind this and got him to call his district manager. When he called me back he told me that it is company policy to not give employment letters for people who need to obtain a work permit and/or a SIN #. However, I have a friend who is also a US citizen, who just last week was offered a job at another Starbucks in the same city, and took her letter from Starbucks in to get her SIN #. I cannot work anywhere unless I receive a letter to take in with a work permit application and SIN # application, so his argument is circular. Does anyone know about the policies of Starbucks in Canada? All I see in this situation are inconsistencies and a possible revoking of my job offer based on national origin. Any information or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
