A Bit Backwards?

OK, so I'm a barista with a franchise... yes, franchise... out here in Arizona. (Franchise held by Target. Which, I'm willing to wager, is worse than Starbucks.)

Given out here (I'm not certain if the baristas who frequent this site are mainly from the NE, or if there's any other SW people on), is it really so wrong to want to go from Target to Starbucks, considering the major improvements in wage and benefits from doing so?

i've heard of some starbucks licensees that pay more and some that pay less. What are you making over there, if you don't mind me asking?

hmm... I been a barista for the last three years. I started off in a really shitty chain coffee stand and worked my way up to a privately owned coffee shop. there is definetly nothing wrong with moving onto better paying jobs..

Presently, the job i have isnt too bad. I make really good tips and that makes up for the fact that im getting paid minimum wage. However, the same issues that i faced at every coffee shop ive worked at still apply. Ive never been paid more than minimum wage, and although tips are good, i still believe it is the employers responsibility to pay a living wage. On top of that, there is the whole issue of health insurance. I dont have health insurance because i cant afford it, and once again, it should really be the responsibility of the employer to pay for this. Another thing that really gets to me is underemployment in the coffee industry. I can never get more than maybe 30 hours a week at any job ive had. Since i pay for school out of my own pocket, undermployment makes paying for school really difficult. The overiding issue that ive faced at every barista job ive had has been the manager-worker relationship. 'The Manager always know best', the manager controls the schedule, ect.... know what i mean? some jobs i have even had managers who, despite their higher pay, would steal our tips..

I guess what im saying is that regardless of where you work, or the improvement in pay, you will still face the same issues. Its just a simple fact of the retail industry.

hiphopbarista, the wage certainly depends on the geographic location of the coffee shop (starbucks) , although I'm quite sure starbucks situated on my college campus is only offering minimum wage (5.15) for its employees. I attend Northern Michigan University the very same school Howard graduated from back in the day. Marquette, is on the banks of Lake Superior in the upper peninsula of M.I. very dependent on local business. And, in my opinion bringing a corporate giant to a small town and small university is a crime in itself. So watch out you may get 10/hr in N.Y. city and 5/hr in some small farming town in the midwest where howard decides to put two other old local coffee shops out of business...

The franchise are even worse. In New jersey, a state with a very high cost of living has statbucks along the highway that pay 6/hr with no tips allowed. NO TIPS thats bullshit!!!!!!

Around here the franchise stores in Albertsons and Safeway grocery stores actually make more hourly and are part of those stores unions!!

I once worked for a "mom & pop" coffee shop. I was happy to leave them for Starbucks. They (mom&pop)couldnt/wouldnt offer ANY insurance or any paid time off. That shop eventually went out of business(thank God) I know a few people who blame Starbucks for putting them out of business. Not true, they put themselves out of business by not being able to offer anything to their employees other than the right to be peirced up and wear a ripped descendants t-shirt to work, woo-hoo!
